The Transition.
The transition from dating online to dating in person can be tricky, especially if it's your first
time. Online dating is comfortable and switching to face-to-face can be daunting - all of a
sudden you need to think about time, clothes, makeup, venue and if your '84 jalopy will even
get you there at all, let alone on time, instead of lounging on the couch and type-dating in
your pajamas.
 
But don't fret! If you survive this first date, you may be on to something special - real life
communication and company with a person you may soon grow to love, or at least have fun
with. And isn't that the ultimate goal of online dating, to eventually get off the computer and
to date in person?
 
Here are four ways you can ease the online-offline dating transition:
 
Be yourself. This is the most important thing when going out on a first date. For the last
few days, weeks, or months, you've been communicating with this other person via email,
instant messages, and phone calls, but in each of these cases, you still have room to hide
a little. Now is your chance to lift the veil and truly show off who you are, in all your bold
colors, dreadlocks, and mismatched socks. This is a first date; it's not a marriage. If s/he
doesn't like what s/he sees, the most you've lost is a single night out on the town. The last
thing you would want is to get jumbled up is a dishonest web, have the first date go over
well, and then spend the rest of your relationship trying to get untangled.
 
Make a good impression. There's being yourself on the one hand, and there's trying to
improve on your weaknesses on the other. If you're generally a late person, you don't need
to "be yourself" by making sure that you show up late to your first date. Maybe you hate to
shower, but don't reveal that as soon as you sit down to dinner. Be on time, dress
